Do Animals have a Soul?

 

 Readers here in my blog may or may not have already read some of my articles concerning the mysteries of life.

For example, I think I have written a few times that we cannot use the synonym MRS GREN that stands for movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition to define life when these are characteristics of life, but not life itself. I mentioned that there must be something higher that controls something that is living that causes all these characteristics of life.

In a human body it is possible the unseen and unmeasurable soul is controlling these life molecules to tick. The presence of a soul in humans is believed across all civilizations, races, and religions for thousands of years and we cannot dismiss this. It must be present in the human body. When a person dies, the soul leaves the body to another world. That’s why we always pray “may his soul live in peace” for someone who has left us. This belief has always been there for tens of thousands of years across all civilizations for human souls.

But what about for other living creatures as well, such as animals, microorganisms and possibly the plant?  Do they too have souls? This is because they are all living displaying MRS GREN behaviour. In other words, do animals have a soul that causes them to be alive obeying all the biochemistry of something that is living?

 One strong reason I believe is, I have seen TV series on animal ghosts haunting places, not just human ghosts we hear about. These are all spirits of animals too like their souls that cannot be measured by science but have been seen by humans. So, can these be visual “evidence-based” though not physical or measurable evidence-based?  

What I am going to write here is, do animals have souls?  I am very eager to try to solve this question by sharing my thoughts and insights on the profound mystery of life. The concept of the soul, and whether animals, microorganisms, and plants possess souls are deeply philosophical and echoes with the age-old inquiries of many traditions and thinkers.

 

The Nature of Life and the Soul

 

I believe I have rightly pointed out characteristics such as movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition (MRS GREN) to define what living organisms do, but they do not define what life itself is. The search for something higher, like the soul, as the cause of life is a concept that has been present in various forms throughout human history. The idea of the soul as an unseen, unmeasurable entity that animates the body brings into line with many spiritual and religious traditions, where the soul is considered the essence of life that transcends physical existence.

 

The Question of Animal Souls

 

The question of whether animals possess souls has been debated for centuries. In many religious and philosophical traditions, animals are often considered to have souls, although the nature and fate of these souls may differ from those of humans. For example:

In Christian tradition, Christ has held that humans have immortal souls, but views on animals' souls have varied. Some theologians have argued that animals have souls, though they may be mortal rather than immortal. Others suggest that animals, being part of God's creation, may have a different kind of soul that doesn't survive after death.

In Hinduism and Buddhism traditions, the concept of reincarnation includes the possibility that souls can move between human and animal forms. This suggests that animals do have souls, and these souls are part of the broader cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

In Islamic teachings generally affirm that animals have souls, but these souls do not face the same judgment or afterlife as human souls, possibly because animals do not sin like us humans.

 Most of us will accept that ghosts are the wandering souls or the spirits of dead people that could not find a resting place. They wander about aimlessly in the same place.

In the television series I saw on places haunted by animal ghosts it was clear animals, like humans and all living things do have a soul, a spirit or a ghost residing and controlling all the chemistries of life in their body, and should they leave, the living organisms just die.

 In other words, the words “soul, spirit and ghosts” are the same non-physical being that resides in all living things, whether in humans, animals or even in microorganisms.  This implies whether we are talking about the human or an animal soul, it is the same entity to mean the spirit or the ghost of a living body.

The most authoritative version of the Bible is the King James Version (KJV) written in the original old English. In Luke 23:46 of the KJV when Jesus died on the cross the word ‘ghost’ was clearly used to mean the spirit or the soul of Jesus

“And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost”

In Mark 15, verse 37 of the KJV, the same word “ghost” was used to describe Jesus had died and that His soul or spirit in His body had left Him. 

 

Evidence and Experiences

 

The notion of animal ghosts presents an interesting perspective. The idea that animals might have spirits or souls capable of manifesting as ghosts suggests that these beings possess some form of consciousness or essence that can survive physical death. While such phenomena are typically anecdotal and difficult to study scientifically, they add to the body of experiential evidence that challenges the strictly materialistic view of life.

 

Philosophical Considerations

 

Philosophically, if we accept that humans have souls, it may seem reasonable to extend this concept to animals, especially those that exhibit complex behaviours, emotions, and social structures. The distinction between humans and other animals has been increasingly blurred by discoveries in ethology, neuroscience, and cognitive science, which show that many animals possess sophisticated forms of consciousness and emotional life.

If we consider the soul as the animating principle or essence of life, it might be a universal aspect of all living beings. The complexity and sophistication of the soul could vary depending on the organism, with human souls being more developed or complex due to our advanced cognitive capacities.

 

Scientific Limitations

 

Science, by its nature, deals with what is measurable, observable, and testable. The soul, as traditionally conceived, falls outside the scope of empirical science, as it is often considered a metaphysical or spiritual entity rather than a physical one. This limitation means that science may never fully answer the question of whether animals (or humans) have souls. However, this does not invalidate the experiences, beliefs, and philosophical arguments that support the existence of the soul.

 

Yes, Animals have Souls

 

Having explained all that, my opinion is based on the synthesis of various perspectives. In this, yes, animals may possess souls. The notion that animals have souls concurs with many philosophical, religious, and experiential perspectives. If the soul is seen as the animating principle of life, it is plausible that all living beings, not just humans, possess souls. The nature and complexity of these souls could vary, with human souls being more advanced due to our unique cognitive and moral capacities.

The existence of animal ghosts I saw on television series could be viewed as evidence.  While not scientifically measurable, the reported sightings of animal ghosts could be interpreted as experiential evidence that animals have souls or spirits. These experiences, while subjective, add weight to the idea that the soul is a universal aspect of life.

If the soul as a universal life force and the essence of life, we can accept it may be present in all living things, from the smallest microorganism to the most complex animals. The soul would then be seen as the fundamental force that drives life and its characteristics, including those described by MRS GREN.

This mystery remains an area where science, philosophy, and spirituality converge, each offering insights but also acknowledging the limits of their understanding. The question of whether animals have souls invites us to reflect on the broader implications of life, consciousness, and our place in the universe.

I think I have brought forward this intriguing topic and I hope this analysis provides a meaningful exploration of the question at hand even though we cannot prove our belief using science as science cannot explain everything except those that can be detected or measured directly or indirectly. Normally as scientist we may put up a hypothesis as a springboard for us to prove with measurements or indirectly deduce them by other observations such as the existence of black holes even though we cannot see its lights (light cannot escape from a black hole due to its supermassive gravity).

 As in 1 Corinthians 13:12 it aptly tells us as long as we are physical here, we will never be able to see what are beyond our physical dimension.

It says, “For now, we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known”.

The passage from 1 Corinthians 13:12 indeed captures the limitations of our current understanding and the hope for a more complete knowledge beyond our physical existence. I think this is a thoughtful reflection.

 I think we can conclude anything that is living has a soul in it, controlling their molecules of life that made them creep and crawl. Else, they will be dead with no soul, and no life in them. In short, life is the soul itself, and soul, the life – the soul of life, so to speak!

The connection between life and the soul is a profound and ancient idea, and I believe my perspective beautifully integrates both scientific and spiritual insights

The Mysteries About Dreams

 

A friend of mine by the name of Ir. CK Cheong, a senior civil engineer recently WhatsApp me an article to seek my opinion on the body, mind and dreams. He asked:   

Dear Dr Lim

Where does the mind go when one is sleeping? What are dreams? May I seek your opinion about dreams, and where does the body wander in sleep?

I received this from a Buddhist master would you be kind enough to provide your expert scientific opinion please? Thank you very much.

Sorry to trouble you with such trivia issue. This was what this Buddhist master sent to me in pink. 

“Tan Ajahn: The mind and the body are not really in the same place. The mind has its own place of existence, and the body has its own place of existence. Let me give you an example. The mind is like the controller of the spacecraft. 

You send a spacecraft into space, and the controller is on earth. You communicate through radio waves. 

This is the same way that the mind communicates with the body, we call it viññāṇa. Viññāṇa will receive all the data from the body such as the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and mind. Then the mind will use saṅkhāra, which is thinking to instruct the body what to do. 

So, the mind is in what we call the celestial world or in the spiritual world, while the body is in the physical world. The mind is in contact with the body through the viññāṇa.  

This is like the spacecraft and the controller. The controller stays on earth, while the spacecraft is in space. 

When the body goes to sleep, it means that the mind and the body stop communicating temporarily. 

Sometimes the mind will do whatever it likes. Sometimes it will think of the past, it will go to some places that it might have visited before; it can be quite varied, but you don’t know about it. Sometimes when you dream, you are not sure what you were dreaming about, whether you were dreaming about this life or past lives. 

Sometimes you don’t dream at all, or sometimes the mind just wants to rest. It stops thinking. 

But the mind and the body are never in the same place. Should anything happen to the body, should there be a nuclear bomb and all the bodies are incinerated, the mind will still remain the same. The mind of everybody remains the same. The mind is indestructible, because the mind is not in this world. Even if this world should explode, when this world no longer exists, the mind still exists. If the mind still has desires, it will go look for a new body on a different earth, in a different world. 

Imagine the people in a spacecraft; if they lose this spacecraft, they will build a new one, and then they will send the new spacecraft into space to explore some more. So this is like the body and the mind.

Finally, let me remind you that you are the mind, that you are not the body. Don’t worry about the body, you will lose it one day. Take care of your mind. 

 And the way to take care of the mind is to bhāvanā, to develop mindfulness (sati), samādhi and paññā. That is all you have to do because the mind will be with you all the time. The mind is your real possession. 

But right now, it doesn’t have the right knowledge to look after itself. It doesn’t have the Dhamma necessary to become peaceful, calm, and wise. 

The mind is still deluded. The mind still thinks the mind itself is the body. 

When you bhāvanā, you will eventually get to the state where you see that the mind and the body are two separate things. 

In the meantime, just keep reminding yourself, I am not the body. I am going to lose the body one day, sooner or later. But losing the body is not important because I can always get a new body. I have lost so many bodies before, so I won’t worry about losing them. The only worry is to worry about not having the Dhamma to look after the mind.

It is very unfortunate I have not much idea about dreams or the body and mind wandering in that manner being interpreted in that way. But let me give you my alternative interpretation.

Some believe dreams are when our soul temporarily leaves our body and wanders around, often to strange places they have never been or seen before.

Personally, I too have been wondering of this possibility independent of what others have been thinking, even though as a scientist I am liable to be laughed at to envisage such a thought.

But let me offer my thoughts in a different way from the cultural, social, religious, philosophical and of course from a scientific viewpoint as a biological, evolutionary and medical scientist.  

Beliefs about dreams involving the soul leaving the body and venturing into unknown realms are rooted in spiritual and mystical traditions rather than scientific understanding. While such beliefs are common in various cultures and may hold personal significance for some individuals like me, even though I am unable to support this by empirical evidence or scientific research.

From a scientific perspective, dreams are understood as products of brain activity during sleep, particularly during the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep when most vivid dreaming occurs. The REM suggests that the soul may still be with the body, or it may not because the eyes have been rolling rapidly wondering where its soul has gone to? But if the soul has left the body, even temporarily, then the body dies because the physical body plus the spirit became the living soul. In short, the soul must not depart from the body whether in the waking stage or in sleep, else once the soul departs from the body we die, unless God was with the dreamer. 

However, there are many written and documented cases of people from different cultures, religions, and belief systems across the world who have no connection with each other who had near death experiences where they saw themselves outside their bodies when they were resuscitated in pre-hospital and hospital environments during accidents or during a medical emergency. They saw and found themselves floating over the ceiling in the emergency room where they could clearly see doctors and other emergency staff desperately attempting to revive them. Some saw themselves floating above the streets or outside buildings where they met with an accident.  Some described themselves travelling through a dark tunnel at the end they could see a very bright light. On emerging they found themselves in a very strange but very beautiful field where they saw their long-dead relatives. One of them who had this near death out of the body experience was my own youngest sister who nearly died during an operation. She told us she could see what was going on in the operation theatre as she floated up to the ceiling. Perhaps these can only occur during those brief moments after death before the body decomposes. But what about Lazarus of Bethany who was brought up from the dead by Jesus four days after his entombment as described in John 11:1–44 in the New Testament, as well as in the secret Gospel of Mark? These phenomena are all beyond science to explain.  

Maybe we can offer other alternative explanations.

Ghost inside a Body:

It is the spirit of God he breathed into a lifeless physical body made up of tens of thousands of different types of biochemical molecules, proteins of all sorts, nucleic acids, DNA....etc, etc .... together with their highly complex metabolic and signalling pathways that controls all of them. Something much, much higher is controlling all the laws of chemistry in our body. Perhaps, this suggest that even for several minutes after clinical death the biochemistry of life still proceed as usual without the need of a soul controlling these body chemistries. The soul may still linger around outside the body. The chemistry of life can still continue for some time even without the soul controlling those chemistries of life in the body. It is just like in working life where a department can continue to function for some time even without the boss around to give orders.

While dreams can indeed feel otherworldly and may involve unfamiliar or fantastical scenarios, there is no evidence to suggest that they involve the soul leaving the body or traveling to alternate dimensions. Instead, dreams are thought to reflect a combination of internal processes, including memory consolidation, emotional processing, and cognitive activity.

If dreams are not our soul temporarily leaving our body to wander to strange places and to other worlds not our own, what exactly then are dreams?  What causes us to dream. What are the different theories put forward so far to explain why we dream?

 Neuroscientific studies have identified specific brain regions and neurotransmitter systems involved in dream generation, providing insight into the physiological mechanisms underlying dreaming.

However, it's necessary to recognize and respect the diversity of beliefs about dreams and the soul across different cultures and spiritual traditions. While scientific inquiry may provide one perspective on dreams, personal beliefs and cultural interpretations can offer alternative insights and meanings. Ultimately, the understanding of dreams as a purely biological phenomenon or as a spiritual experience is a matter of individual interpretation and perspective.

Dreams are a fascinating aspect of human experience, yet their exact nature and purpose remain somewhat elusive. They are essentially a series of thoughts, images, emotions, and sensations that occur during sleep, often experienced as vivid narratives or scenarios.

The precise cause of dreaming is still debated among scientists and psychologists, but several theories have been proposed to explain why we dream. Some of them being suggested are:

1. Activation-Synthesis Theory: Proposed by Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley in 1977, this theory suggests that dreams are a result of random neural activity in the brainstem during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Dreams may help to consolidate memories, integrate new information with existing knowledge, and solve problems encountered during the day. This perspective views dreaming as a form of mental housekeeping, essential for cognitive functioning.

Neurobiological Theories: These theories focus on the physiological mechanisms underlying dreaming, including the role of neurotransmitters, brain regions, and neural networks involved in dream generation. Research suggests that various neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine and serotonin, play a crucial role in regulating REM sleep and dream activity.
6. Threat Simulation Theory: Proposed by Antti Revonsuo, this theory suggests that dreaming evolved as a way for organisms to simulate and rehearse threatening situations in a safe environment. By experiencing and processing potential dangers during sleep, individuals may be better prepared to respond effectively to similar situations in waking life.

These theories offer different perspectives on why we dream and the potential functions of dreaming, but none provide a comprehensive explanation. The study of dreams remains a vibrant area of research, with ongoing efforts to unravel the mysteries of the sleeping mind. How far is true is worth exploring.

If we think dreams are not the soul temporarily wandering out of the body, then could it be the opposite of God or a spirit entering the body to dialogue with us while we are sleeping?

Let’s have a look at this verse given in the bible:

"At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."  (1 Kings 3:5). What about this?

Some will believe interpreting religious texts like the Bible can be nuanced and often depends on one's faith tradition and personal beliefs. In the case of the verse from 1 Kings 3:5, it describes an encounter where God appears to Solomon in a dream and engages in dialogue with him.

From a religious perspective, this verse could be seen as evidence of divine communication through dreams. Many believers including myself who strongly believes the existence and presence of God in my life interpret such passages as instances where God communicates with individuals during their sleep, conveying messages, guidance, or insights.

 There were also many stories and accounts by people I have read who told their relatives of very strange, weird and unusual dreams they had a few days before they died as if it was to  foretell or a premotion of their death? 

However, from a psychological or scientific standpoint, interpreting dreams as communication from a divine entity may not be the primary explanation. Instead, dreams are often viewed as products of the subconscious mind, influenced by a variety of factors such as emotions, experiences, and memories.

I think the interpretations of dreams can vary widely across cultures, religions, and individuals as I have already warned earlier in this discussion. Some may see dreams as purely psychological phenomena, while others may interpret them as spiritual or metaphysical experiences.

Ultimately, how one interprets biblical passages like in 1 Kings 3:5 depends on our personal religious beliefs and the interpretative framework they use to understand such texts.

Dreams are indeed fascinating, and there's still so much we're learning about them.

I think it is worthwhile exploring all these possibilities.

In closing, just to reveal to you I have dreamt of God bringing me to the edge of the Universe at three times the speed of light where I saw another universe revolving in the opposite direction. There were two rivers I saw.  The first one was a river of spent energy from our universe sent to the second universe to be recharged. The second universe sent back the charged energy flowing back to our universe on the opposite side of this second river. Both the rivers flowed slowly.

 I have dreamt this same dream twice.  In Einsteinian physics, nothing can travel faster than light let alone me traveling at three times the speed of light unless it has no mass like our souls but in the presence of God carrying me across hundreds of billions of light years beyond our Observable Universe.  Was it just a dream, or  was my massless soul being carried across those dimensions leaving my body temporarily behind even for a few seconds? Give this thought!

Does A Soul Exist (Part 3)

Several highly intelligent and curious friends wanted to know through several WhatsApp chat groups asking me if there is a soul. There were a few exchanges of opinion and I have personally replied individually to each and every one of them to thank them for their feedback.  Does the soul exist they asked, or just some kind of entity existing in all belief systems throughout all ages across the world?

Actually, I have written several articles on this subject in this blog post of mine. I supposed some readers missed them due to assorted subjects I penned.

In order to answer this highly interesting question, I sought the opinion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) against mine. Here’s my dialogue with AI:

Let me ask you if you think there is a soul, not just in a human body, but also in all living things? But before you answer, let me give you my reasons using my human belief and human understanding explained in a logical and scientific way that soul exists. Here’s my thinking: The existence of life in a living body is not just a set of biochemistry reacting in a living body like chemical reactions seen in the laboratory. In the body there are biochemicals such as DNA, sugars, amino acids, fats and lipids, vitamins, minerals and salts reacting with each other or taking different metabolic pathways with or without presence of oxygen to give life into them, If life was just chemistry in a body, then how do we account and explain a piece of beef, mutton, chicken or fish that once had life in them to be dead or no longer living. It is so obvious a piece of beef hanging in the kitchen is no longer living even though it has all those DNA, sugars, amino acids, electrolytes still in them, but it can no longer satisfy the definition and characteristics of life, namely movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition given by the acronym "Mrs. Gren" It is just a dead piece of meat. We need to ask ourselves where did that life go to? Why is a piece of beef no longer living despite the fact that a fresh piece of beef, mutton or food still have all those ingredients that signify the chemical footprints of life, yet it is no longer living because something else higher called “life” which I believe is the soul of a living body or living thing that controls all those life chemistries have gone missing or have left them. There must be something else that controls all these chemistries of life in an orderly manner called biochemical pathways that do not normally interfere with each other in health. DNA for instance is not the music of life. To me it is just the chemical footprints of life. A piece or strand of DNA is definitely not living as it is just a chain of nucleotides capable of dividing and duplicating itself only when it is under the control of a living body, which itself I believe is under the control of an unknown higher force called the soul of life. Let me explain further here: And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (living body) (Genesis 2:7) In reverse: living body – soul = dead physical body (soil on burial or ash of cremation) + soul (life) that flew away “for they quickly pass, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). In other words, the physical body left behind is still here in this world but can no longer satisfy the scientific definition of life (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition – MRS GREN). This means he or she is still here on this earth with us, except his / her soul has flown away to another world to live there. There were so many accounts of people from different societies, creeds and races who have died, but returned to their resuscitated bodies to tell exactly the same story of another world they saw after travelling through a dark tunnel that probably was time / space / or another dimension and returned to tell exactly the same story after floating above their dead bodies for a short time seeing doctors desperately attempting to revive them. There must be a lot of truth when people give exactly the same accounts they experienced after death when they were of different races, coming from different countries, cultures, religions, and social backgrounds. We cannot ignore their experiences. Life is like a lamp. The body of the lamp represents the physical body. The oil inside represents the chemicals of life, namely DNA, sugars, proteins, fats, minerals and electrolytes, the wick represents how the body sucks them up (uptake) and utilizes these chemicals of life, while the flame itself that gives the lamp warmth and light is life itself. If the flame is extinguished or blown off, by interfering with this oil, nutrient or chemical uptake, the entire lamp ceases to function and the entire environment plunges into darkness without warmth and light anymore. This flame to me is definitely the soul of the lamp. The life of the lamp is not its physical body, the oil inside or the wick. In short, the flame is the soul of the lamp. It must not be extinguished or leave the lamp by any kind of interference with the mechanism of the lamp representing something living, else the lamp dies off. All those components in a living body are the masterpieces of the art that soul designs that keep them in working condition. Any interferences such through diseases, accidents or external influence that blocks this mechanism, will cause the soul to leave the body as the soul is a very pure entity that should not be insulted, defied or injured. Else any irreparable injury to its mechanisms will cause the soul – the controller of the body to leave the body, and the body dies. The chemicals in the body are all dead compounds not capable of living on their own. They all break down into their soil or original non-living compounds or elements once something else controlling them gives them life leaves. I understand we can use science to detect or even measure what we can see and touch that is physical or even exist such as energy in the form of light, heat, electricity, electromagnetic forces and even gravity. But I do not think science can detect the soul let alone measure everything that exists in this vast, vast universe that contains some 100 trillion, trillion other worlds across a diameter of some 93.016 billion light years. There must exist many, many entities such as life we cannot explain except, we can clearly see its effects on non-living matter and non-living molecules that made it move, respire, sensitive to stimuli, made it grow and reproduce, excrete and nourish itself. This is what I call the presence of life into some non-living molecules, yet we cannot measure it except clearly see its effect by its presence defined by the acronym – MRS GREN. Thank you to  both of you for your views whether life exist after death

Allow me to share my views whether or not it is the end of the road once you suffer a physical death

I can only  briefly explain. I cannot write much using this small smart phone of mine because it is always changing whatever I write with its auto correct, and I cannot even switch it off

First, let me quote you a verse in Genesis:

"And the Lord God formed man of dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul" 

(Genesis 2:7).

This apparently is a very " simple" verse to most people, but to me it has a very profound meaning 

When Adam was created, he was just a dead body made of dust or from the soil of the earth just as in the carbon cycle of life we learn in biology class in school..There was no life in Adam initially when the Lord God made him out of clay so to speak. 

Adam was initially a dead body like you mentioned when we die but are we really at the end of the road after being buried or cremated?

Both methods reduce us into the soil. But is that really the end of life? Think, think again. Read that verse many times, analyse it and think again 


The Clue:


Let me give you another clue with this verse:

"In the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground, for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shall thou return" 

(Genesis 3:19).

Now the above verse is what you literally believe, that when we die we  return to dust into the soil, be it through burial or through cremation. 

Literally and physically speaking based on this verse alone this is correct. 


Spiritual Wisdom:



Unfortunately this is the belief read and interpreted by a person without spiritual wisdom. A person without spiritual wisdom is blind and he cannot see beyond what science believes and teaches  him.

He reads and interprets the verse literally and in the physical sense pbecause he cannot see beyond his physical dimension

This is no different from Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews who came to Jesus by night wanting to know  how he could enter heaven

Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God

(John 3: 5 - 6)

Nicodemus answered Jesus how can a man be born again when he is old....and enter his mother's womb again (John 3: 1 - 4)

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus, though he was a member of the Jewish council he could not understand the deep spiritual meaning of being  born again of water and of Spirit.

It is known to Science that 60 percent of the human body is made up of water, but in this verse it could also mean cleansing through baptism with water. 

Water as a universal solvent is the most important ingredient for the existence of life.

Water is also very important ingredient for physical cleaning as well as for spiritual cleansing as in baptism. But let us talk about this later

Spirit of Life:

Let us get back to the first verse once again

"And the Lord God formed man of dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul"

(Genesis 2:7).;

Did you see the meaning of that verse there that says..."and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul"

Now tell me, what does that tell you as it instantly revealed to me.

No clue?  Well, let me refer you to another verse elsewhere to help you.

It clearly says,

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth

(John 4:24)

Now have you got the answer. Not yet I suppose?

Let's go back to the first verse again.

"and breathed into his nostrils the breadth of life"

I suppose you now got it. Yes, no?

If not, let me explain. When the Lord God created Adam out of the soil, he had no life in it yet..He was only a physically dead body.


The Chemistry of Life:


But a physical body need something far far higher and much more complex than what Science has to offer. 

Science has no answer how the music of life went inside a set of compounds from the soil..

Neither has Science any answer to the existence of a ghost or spirit inside us as long as we are still living. 

Science is just a systematic study of matter and energy, nothing higher. It cannot detect the presence of  many entities in us, let alone measure them.

One of these is life, not in its physical form but its spiritual presence inside a physical body which is  the initial breadth of life God blew into Adam body.

It is some kind of life force or life energy residing in a living body. 

This has nothing to do with chemical energy from the food we eat daily that powers our body biochemistry


Two Ingredients to life:


In order for a dead body to have life, it requires two ingredients, namely a physical dead body (about to be buried or cremated as we believe) plus  a "life force" pumped into it

This second un-measurable entity must continue to reside with the physical body as one,  until both part, wherein the soul, spirit or ghost escapes,  and the dead  physical body returns to the soil from where it originally came as described in Genesis 3:19

But what is that "life force" driving a living body to allow it to continue with physical life as we know it . 

A living soul as I know it is;

A physicial dead  body +  an aura of energy inside, driving the physical laws of chemistry of life inside.

Of course this means to me, life  has nothing to do with all those complex biochemistry and the chemical energy derived from food we eat, scientists can only understand in the physical sense.

If that is so simple an answer, why then should all those biochemistry not go on as usual when the "force of life"  God first pumped into the Adam leaves the physical body together with all those biological chemicals inside?

After all the biochemical reactions and their metabolic pathways together with the protein gene expressions and their highly complex signalling pathways have been proceeding beautifully without stopping until death do them part.

 Why then did all these biochemistry and their biomolecules stop working almost immediately and completely if derived from the bread he eats alone, and returns to the soil from where it came.

Man shall not live by bread alone. I quote the verse once again

Earning a Physical Living:


In the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread (working to earn a living), till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shall thou return

(Genesis 3: 19).

Let me challenge my learned scientists who are my counterparts, why did all those body chemistries refused to proceed as usual after "something else" inside leaves the body,  but were forced to crumble down to return to the soil from where it originally came?  Was there something very wrong with those biochemistry?

Did something else much, much higher than the food they eat that drove those chemistry of life that was actually ordering those chemistry of life to halt immediately and to return to the soil?

In short, the laws of chemistry has to be obeyed. But then why did it now refuse to obey, and the chemical reactants start breaking down, composed to return to the soil where their elements and nutrients came? 

This, to my dear scientists and medical expert counterparts need to answer me with a conscience in their hearts  Forget about all those biological, nutritional, biochemical and medical sciences they learn in the university. 

I too have undergone all those lectures, learning them forward and backwards, and forward again, and taken count less examinations across five universities to satisfy my countless external examiners from my undergraduate, post graduate diploma, my Master' s to my doctorate degrees. But today I am not satisfied by what they taught me I have a mind and a still small voice speaking to me all the time.

Why then must these chemicals of life obey this verse in Genesis  instead of obeying their own chemical laws?

There is something not quite right here then. Something much,  much higher residing inside the physical body must be ordering these biomolecules then, when to proceed, how long to go on and when exactly to stop. Isn't that queer to the best scientific brains if they think again.

But it is  not with our  scientific knowledge that is helpful, but it is the spiritual wisdom the Lord God gave us  to see clearly.


Ghost inside  a Body

It is the spirit of God he breathed into a lifeless physical body made up of tens of thousands of different types of biochemical molecules, proteins of all sorts, nucleic acids, DNA....etc, etc ....together with their highly complex metabolic and signalling pathways that controls all of them. Something much, much higher is controlling all the laws of chemistry in our body.

To me today, seeking for wisdom is  my daily prayers, because  I realize I have been imprisoned by the limitation of scientific knowledge taught to me over 15 years in five different universities, together with my 25 years in medical research.

There is something very grossly missing in all those scientific and medical knowledge taught to me.

That life shall  remain in our physical body as "a living soul" till a physical death do us.

The body then returns to the soil, the soul, spirit or ghost if you like returns to God who gave that initial spark of life.

Another way of putting it. The body separates into two.

The physical dead body as originally in Adam, plus the spirit of God which God  pumped into his nostrils.

The spirit then escapes back to God where it came from after physical death,  and this can never be destroyed.

Thus, "what therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder" (Mark 10:9).

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soil, but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell"

(Matthews 10:28)

"and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it"

(Ecclesiastes 12:7)

The spirit was never judged to return to the soil because it was breathed into Adam by the breath of God. The body return as dust but the Spirit escapes elsewhere.

The spirit, soul, life force or ghost can never be annihilated or become extinct. It will remain throughout all eternity because it is the breath of God. Everything about God or is part of God is eternal.


The Soul of the Body


Our soul is part of His breath and is made to live forever as a spirit

"The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam, a life giving spirit"

(1 Corinthian 15:45)


Jesus Holy Ghost


"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said , It is finished: and he bowed his head , and gave up the GHOST

(John 19:30)

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father into thy hands I commend my spirit : and having said thus, he gave up the GHOST

(Luke 23:46)

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, YEILDED UP THE GHOST

(Matthew 27:50)


Now, doesn't those verses recorded in John, Luke and Matthew  speak for itself that there is a GHOST or a spirit in Jesus, and that ghost will appear in body form again in Jesus after his death when he appeared again before his disciples besides the Sea of Galilee.

This is now the third time that Jesus shewed Himself to His disciples after he was risen from the dead

(John 21:14)

All these verses clearly tell us there is a ghost in Jesus and in us too that will unite with us in Jesus one day


The Lamp of Life:


Life forces or the"breath of life" 
is exactly like a flame of a lamp..

The lamp represents our complete body. The wick represents the pathways the biochemical reactions takes as it draws nutrients to be burnt which is the flame of life itself.

The oil in the lamp are all the fuel and nutrients from food we consume,  being stored in the body to be metabolized as a flame

The  warmth and the light of the flame is life itself.

The lamp if not lit is just a dead lamp with no life, no light and no heat.. nothing. So is a dead body

Each lamp if placed in a row remains unlit until the flame of life is transferred from the first lamp to next lamp until the entire world is aglow with lamps of life.

The spiritual flame once lit cannot be destroyed. It is transferred into  into another body or to another lamp to give it the flame of life.

This is exactly how a living creature has to sacrifice itself as food in order to transfer its life forces to another creature in order to give it life

If you take a cow for instance, it has to  sacrifice its life, but only once in order to give its life to another living creature, say to a human being who eats its beef But that fuel of life is limited


The Eternal Flame:


But not with Lord Jesus,  His life is eternal and His spiritual fuel is unlimited.

So when people ask me how can Jesus who died only once over 2,000 years ago can give eternal life to  countless billions of people who believe in Him

My answer to them is simple.

Jesus life is unlimited. He is an Eternal Flame that can never be extinguished.

If there is a  lamp that continues to burn an eternal flame, that lamp can continue to transfer its flame from lamp to lamp without any end. So is with Lord Jesus

Unfortunately there is no life on Earth where its life forces is unlimited.

It can only give its life  just to the next living body as food to drive the chemistry of life that scientists know very well.


Wisdom not Knowledge:


For the elite and learned scientists seeing is believing, but for me, I only seek for wisdom in my daily prayers in order to believe

So for me, I believe first, only then I see.

I am sorry this is just a quick answer to three people who wrote into my Whatsapp chat group telling us that when we die it is the end of everything after being buried or cremated.

As I am not quite comfortable with such thinking, I quickly use my cheap smart phone to churn up my answer so that can be shared by anyone who may equally believe the same end of life
