Corona Virus Abhors High Temperatures

by

lim ju boo

Viruses are very intolerant to high temperatures since they are believed to have originated from outer space as many scientists in astro-biology are convinced

Deep Freeze in Suspended Animation:

Originally viruses such as coronaviruses remain “hibernated” as pre-life molecules or in suspended animation for at least 3.6 – 4.0 billion years in the frigid of interstellar space where I believe they came from, and definitely not spontaneously generated by or from bats, or artificially created in a laboratory.

The CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background) temperature in outer space after the Big Bang is no higher than just 3 Kelvin (3.0 degrees above absolute temperature) or 2.72548±0.00057 Kelvin to be exact, and at such temperature all molecular movements almost totally freeze, and where all “life” and pre-life can remain eternally latent

Habitable Earth:

There they remain in deep, deep freeze in the frigid of outer space for almost all eternity until they arrive on a horrendously long, dark, cold and lonely journey to Earth  from the Ort Cloud or brought along  by passing comets   to shower Earth with their  virus-laden cosmic dusts  like seeds being thrown and sowed on soft, ambient, water-rich  grounds on this planet to germinate and multiply among  the myriads of living hosts  and the profusion of biodiversity such as birds, camels, bats and the pangolins that entertain them.

Bite the Hand that Feeds:

However, if they jump hosts from animals to humans in a zoonotic manner and threaten humans for our “hospitality”, we humans will generate unfavorably conditions for their multiplications such as a fever as an immunological response.

It is a tit-for tat retort Nature provides us for our survival as prescribes by the natural biological laws of selection and evolution.

Hence, it is extremely crucial that once a fever is elicited by the body it should never be suppressed by any antipyretics (drugs that subdue fever) such as using paracetamol or aspirin, but the fever be left alone or even encouraged by a warm bath provided it is not too high to cause fever convulsions.

A fever is purposely induced by the body to fight an infection and should not be interfered with by using drugs to suppress this natural physiological response to any infection, unless it is too high that can cause febrile seizures and epilepsy especially in children.

Febrile seizures  in children normally begins when the body temperature is raised from 33.4 ± 0.16 °C to 40.74 ± 0.13 °C (the seizure-threshold temperature) and seizure can begin in 2.9 min.

In such event, the body (oral) temperature can be sponged down by tepid or cool water to manageable levels between 37.5 – 36.9 0 C depending on age between 0 – 2 years till over 65 respectively.

Climate Temperature and Covid-19 Spread:

We can also observe a much higher prevalence rate of the current pandemic distribution of the coronavirus infection in the colder winter  climates like in  China, United States and Europe compared to  the warmer  tropical countries like Malaysia and the entire SE Asia where infection rates,  degrees of morbidity and mortality rates are much lower  during the winter months between December 2019 and currently in May 2020 when the pandemic  spread fast -  if we are scientifically observant enough.

This hypothesis of temperature-infection relationship is also observed by scientists in a study at the prestigious MIT that warm, humid climate is linked to a slower COVID-19 transmission here:

As a former medical research scientist myself who previously worked at MIT, I too concur with them, and also  my conviction from my further post-doctoral education and training and understanding in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Cambridge in 2019, and also in Astronomy and Astrobiology from the University of Oxford also in 2019

Reasons Why Heat Destroys:

We are not sure at this point in time exactly how heat and temperature affect  the virus, let alone know the exact temperature needed to inactivate the virus.

What we do know are from  studies conducted by scientists at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, United States of America, and at the Sun Yat-sen University,  a major Chinese public research university located in Guangzhou, China  where it was shown  that warm weather immobilizes and slow down  the spread of the virus, while cold weather accelerates its spread.

We have already gained this knowledge from reputable studies by scientists from these two very prestigious world class universities. We have to accept their findings.

Clearly their studies showed there is a relationship between the  temperature, and probably the humidity  in the air as well, and the activity of the coronavirus,  in that hot air or the environment slows down or may have killed the virus, while cold air such as the prevailing winter in China, United States and the entire Europe towards the end of December 2019 till May 2020 activates and mobilizes the rapid spread of this virus.

This relationship seems quite clear to us as scientists, and probably to some educated and highly intelligent members of the public who may also be observant.

We are Unsure:

But what we are unsure is the range of temperatures on which heat  can either activate, kill or immobilizes the coronavirus, and the mechanisms how heat plays a role.

In chemistry we know that heat actually accelerates a chemical reaction, but in a  biological activity extreme heat inactivates and destroys all life

Existing Knowledge in Food Science:

However we can only infer from existing knowledge we already know in food science, and / or in nutritional sciences, as well as from what we know in chemistry and biochemistry that heat greatly affects the molecules of proteins in foods, chemistry and biological function in general.

This may be exactly the same mechanism that have affected  the protein envelope that protects the corona virus.

Denaturation of Proteins:

For instance, we already know that heat denatures the proteins in foods by disrupting and possibly if the temperature is high enough, destroys both the secondary and tertiary structures of the proteins.

However if the heat is mild to moderate,  the protein will still be denatured, but  the denaturation reactions will not be strong enough to break open the peptide bonds which is the primary structure in the sequence of the amino acids.

In other words, the chemical nature of the protein remains the same after denaturation.  It only disrupts the normal alpha-helix and beta sheets in a protein and uncoils it into a random shape. In short it is a physical change.

In chemistry, we know that heat disrupt the hydrogen bonds and non-polar hydrophobic interactions.

What happens is that heat increases the kinetic energy and causes the molecules in any substance inclusive of protein and RNA structures as found in the virus to vibrate so rapidly and violently that the bonds are disrupted. That may have broken up the virus infectivity very effectively?

Damaging Nature of Heat:

Heat is very damaging to most biological materials inclusive of all microorganisms, and probably all viruses as well because of their very simple and short chain protein and genomic sequence.

For instance, food and nutrition scientists and even among lay people and ordinary housewives know that when an egg is being boiled, within just less than a minute the white of egg has already coagulated.

In fact even just in hot water the white of egg has already become opaque or coagulated. This is denaturation of the egg albumin. Everyone has already observed and knows this – even an ordinary housewife or even a child has seen this.

The albumin or white of egg, the major source of protein turns solid when fully boiled.  The proteins in the egg start to coagulate as the temperature rises. The albumin or egg whites coagulate at 60°C, the egg yolks at 65°C, and the entire egg is completely denatured with full coagulation occurring at 70°C.

The same mechanism occurs when meat is cooked.  It shrinks in size.  As the temperature rises, the proteins coagulate and shrinks further as the muscles fibres lose water causing the meat  to become harder and chewy if heat is applied too long. This is food science.

Likewise we can sterilize any equipment such as surgical instruments by heating them to denature and destroy the proteins in bacteria.

Coagulation is irreversible process and the proteins cannot be reversed into their liquid form.

Another example is heating milk.  When heated just below boiling point, a skin forms.  This is due to the milk protein coagulating.

Applied Knowledge:

If we then apply our existing knowledge in chemistry, biochemistry, food science and nutritional sciences,  we can also extrapolate the same knowledge to explain the same in virology and in microbiology on  the reasons why heat is extremely damaging to all biological materials especially their enzymes, nutrients, vitamins, genetic materials, and of course the proteins we have just explained and discussed.

Translation of Food Science into Virology:

This knowledge we can safely translate onto the viruses and coronaviruses (antigen) the reason(s)  why their  protein coat is  very sensitive and protective to them especially to heat and thermal shock.

After all, according to the Panspermia theory life or pre-life forms may have existed from another form and seeded onto Earth after a very, very cold, long and dark journey through outer space where these pre-life molecules were used to almost absolute zero Kelvin for a few billion years, and they may not be able to tolerate extreme heat on arrival into our world This was already mentioned earlier.

What We Still Do Not Know:

Any disruption to this very fragile and sensitive protein coat of the virus, be it just through denaturation by mild heat,  or total destruction by high temperatures, and how this  may affect  the virus activity,  and mobility  -  just like the studies  showed  how  hot and cold climate affects  the spread of this virus as demonstrated by researchers at MIT and at Yat-sen University still needs  further studies

We have little understanding at this point in writing on the degrees of chemical damage heat may have on both its protein structure  and the RNA  configurations and sequencing  of the virus

This virus is very new to us in Science and there is a lot of work still to be done

Face Masks Do Not Protect Against Corona Virus

Face Mask Obsession:

The current pandemic of coronavirus (Covid-19) has caused a massive tide of obsession compulsive disorder (OCD) among almost everyone in the streets, trains, buses, taxis, shopping malls, super markets, banks, shops and literally every public places to don a face mask in their belief that will protect them from getting infected from coronavirus infection.

There is no point of believing without facts and figures from mathematics.

In my profession as a former medical researcher, I use mathematics and statistics to draw an inference in order to draw a conclusion or to prove a belief

The Evidence:

Let’s have a look if a face mask can prevent the coronavirus, or any virus for that matter, from entering through the pores on a face mask.

The finest surgical mask available in the market  is 0.2339 mm thick and  has the smallest pore size of just 19.29 micron (0.01929 mm.

The human coronaviruses measure between 0.1 and 0.2 microns (0.15 micron or 0.00015 mm across).

This means even the best surgical mask with an ultra-fine pores on its fabrics will have a space 128.6 times larger than a coronavirus for it to pass through.

Look it Another Way:

Maybe that is not impressive enough and has not made the point. Let’s look this another way to make it easier to understand.

Suppose we take average shoulder width of an average human.  It would be at least 16 inches (41 cm) for men and 14 inches (36 cm) for women.

Let us average this out as 38.5 cm (385 mm) across. This is 2,566,667 times larger than a coronavirus.

Let us now take the size of an average human being to present the size of a bloated up coronavirus.

Let us now also take the finest pore size available on the best ultra-fine surgical mask to present the size of the  passageway for a human to pass through this pore or hole.

The best and finest surgical mask has the smallest pore size 128.6 times larger than a single coronavirus.

This means the space available for an average size human to pass through is 2,566,667 x 128.6 = 330,073,376 cm = 3300733.76 metres  = 3,300.7 km wide space  or passageway  for any human  to walk, run, jump, skate,  or even fly across.

Mathematics Do Not Lie:

Is that what the public believes as a “no-entry protective” surgical mask they are wearing?

This is mathematics. Facts and figure from statistics and mathematics do not lie

Fly Us into Outer Space:

Now that we have clearly shown the calculation step-by-step, we can even fly tens of thousands of millions of kites freely through this wide-open passageway.

Almost   the entire population of the world, if each  corona virus were to be the size of a human being  is  able to jump or even  fly  through  each  space 3,300 km wide,  and there are tens of thousands of these pores per square cm on a face mask.

Such a surgical or face mask is a free-for-all  outer space  on each  pore, and there are hundreds of thousands of them  on a face mask  for a corona virus the size of an average  human  to literally fly through into their  airways and lungs.

Not Only Just That:

These face mask are so loose that they don’t even fit tightly onto the contour of the face of a wearer.

If we observe carefully as I always do, there is a considerable space between the face and the mask especially at the tunnel-like space between the nose and the face, and that space is no less than 10 mm wide even for a small child, and  much, wider for those with long, sharp and protruding noses.

The easiest path to take for anything that flows, be it air, water, electricity, a stream, a river, a molten lava…anything at all, is always the path of least resistance, and in this case the easiest path for air to enter into the nose of a mask wearer obviously  is none other than through this huge gap along the ridge of the nose, the face and the mask, especially if the mask is not tightly contoured round the entire face, let alone the gigantic opening along the exterior nose.

Would any right thinking person believe the viruses will “squeeze” themselves through the pores of the mask or take the path of least resistance into the nose through this tunnel along the nose?

Not just that alone. I have seen so many people wear masks so loosely that even their lips, nose and all can clearly be seen until even a beetle can crawl in, especially when they talk if I view their faces laterally on one side.

Does that make any sense to anybody that face mask offers protection from viruses to enter? Think and reason this over!

No doctor who knows virology, worthy of his salt, unless he is selling face mask would tell you face and surgical mask can filter out viruses.

Unfortunately there are a substantial numbers of health workers and members of the public who trust  them, and  all of them believe  in fairy tales without any clue in mathematics and scientific truths

The Observation of Louise Pasteur:

Even long, long ago during Louise Pasteur’s time he already knew no filter can filter out viruses.

Louis Pasteur was unable to find a causative agent (virus) for rabies and speculated about a pathogen too small to be detected by microscopes (1).

In 1884, the French microbiologist Charles Chamberland invented the Chamberland filter (or Pasteur-Chamberland filter) with pores so very, very small – so small that it was enough to remove all bacteria from a solution passed through it (2).

In 1892, the Russian biologist Dmitri Ivanovsky used this filter to study what is now known as the tobacco mosaic virus: crushed leaf extracts from infected tobacco plants remained infectious even after filtration to remove bacteria.

Ivanovsky suggested the infection might be caused by a toxin produced by bacteria, but did not pursue the idea (3).

None of them realized it was the viruses, and  not  the bacteria that could not be filtered out even using the finest of the ultra-fine filter, let alone using  a cloth or any surgical or face mask.

Even the giant viruses called mimivirus which is one of the largest viruses with a capsid diameter of 400 nm can just pass through ANY filter just  like an aero plane flying for thousands of km  in open free space.

Their protein filaments measuring 100 nm project from the surface is no match for any filter even for the finest ultra-fine bacterial filters. Their capsid appears hexagonal under an electron microscope.

In 2011, researchers discovered the largest then known virus in samples of water collected from the ocean floor off the coast of Las Cruces.

Even those largest viruses known to us easily pass through any finest filters we can produce.

We have clearly shown the relative sizes of the nCoV and compare them  with  the sizes of the pores on the fabric of the best and the most expensive  surgical mask available in the market.

We have also shown if a coronavirus were to be bloated up to the size of an average human, then the size of the finest pore on a surgical mask is the space of over 3,300 km wide.

Purpose of Face or Surgical Mask:

The question arises what then is the purpose of face mask if it does not protect
A surgeon wears a surgical mask not to protect himself from the patient he is operating on, but to protect the patient in an almost sterile environment from any nasal discharge or droplets from his mouth or saliva onto the open surgical wounds of the patient.

Face masks is meant to protect others if we are sick with a flu, common cold or with corona virus since nasal droplets laden the viruses or from bacteria from a person’s nose and breath can be effectively trapped along with the slimy and sticky mucus on the fabric of the face mask to prevent them from escaping into the air.

But they are completely useless if it is worn by a healthy individual to protect himself from virus in the environment from entering into his airway and respiratory tract as these viruses are so small they will just enter into any mask without any resistance even through the finest ultra-fine  pores on any face mask.

Even the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  in Atlanta, Georgia do not recommend wearing a face mask to prevent Covid-19 infection, but the public think otherwise and  seem to know better.

I hope this explanation from facts and figures helps those obsessive compulsive disorder individuals who believes in fairy-tales

Thank you for reading and believing now.

Dangers of Wearing a Face Mask while Exercising

Thank you Mr. Yoga Thevan for this piece of news!

Jogger's lung collapses after he ran for 2.5 miles while wearing a face mask | Daily Mail Online:

JB Lim

Following the above  news sent by Mr. Yoga to a WhatsApp chat group, this author who was formerly a Trainer and Regional Staff Officer in Emergency Medicine and Basic Trauma Care, and in Advanced First-Aid for St. John Ambulance Malaysia wrote this comment

Other Clinical Scenarios:

Collapse of the lungs is just one possible event wearing a face mask while exercising when there is a very high demand for oxygen, especially to the brain

Allow me to take this opportunity from this news to highlight other possible outcome if we derive the body from adequate ventilation and oxygen during exercise by wearing a face mask

Never obstruct ventilation by wearing a mask in situations where there is a high demand for oxygen such during vigorous exercise, especially when the exercise is vigorous and prolonged such fast running or fast prolonged jogging

Anoxia and the Brain:

The first and the most vital organ affected by oxygen inadequacy is the brain, causing what we call cerebral anoxia (complete depletion of oxygen)  or by partial hypoxia (extremely low oxygen to the tissues).

No doubt the brain will respond by increasing the heart rate (tachycardia if over a 100 beats / min) but not above that rate as the cardiopulmonary systems will fail to compensate to meet the oxygen demand by the brain.

In the event the cerebral anoxia is slight (hypoxia), one of the first presenting symptoms will be the loss of concentration and co-ordination with short-term memory loss.

Others are headache, light-headedness, dizziness, an increase in breathing rate (tachypnea) and sweating. There may be impaired field of vision, a sensation of numbness or tingling (“pins & needles” and paraesthesia), and even a sense of euphoria.

As the demand of oxygen increases due to an obstruction in adequate ventilation from face mask, anoxia, or extreme hypoxia becomes more unmistakable, causing confusion, agitation or drowsiness along with cyanosis (bluish tinge to the skin and lips, mouth and fingertips).

Neurologically, brief jerks of the limbs (myoclonus) and seizures may be presented from the damaging effects of lack of oxygen on the brain. If the anoxia is severe, it will result in loss of consciousness and possibly into coma.

Because of their high demand for oxygen and energy during exercise, the neurons (nerve cells) of the brain are chiefly affected as they are very sensitive to lack of oxygen, causing damage to all the cells throughout the brain, more in certain areas than in other regions.

Areas most sensitive to anoxic events are the cerebral cortex, expressly the parietal lobes and occipital lobes, the memory-storage hippocampus, the basal ganglia and the motor regions of cerebellum. At organ tissue and brain tissue levels we call it hypoxia

Oxygen Debt:

However, there are situations such as a short sprint of say 50 - 100 metres where a runner does not even breathe at all to complete a race.

The sprinter uses energy-rich phosphate bond stored in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the muscles and convert them into adenosine triphosphate (ADP) with the release of energy through hydrolysis.

Such short term exercises that does not require immediate oxygen is called anaerobic exercise and is any activity that breaks down ATP to APD for energy without using oxygen. Generally, these activities are of short length with high intensity.

The idea is to get a lot of energy released within a small period of time and where oxygen demand surpasses the oxygen supply.  During this short spurt of physical activity the person does not even breathe at all, and it is at this moment a face mask may be worn if he or she wishes.

Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, is a small, relatively simple molecule considered as the main energy units of cells.

However in such a very short bust of energy where oxygen and breathing is temporally halted, a face mask may be worn if there is a need, but  this must be released immediately soon  after  for high volume ventilation (breathing) to replace the oxygen needed to metabolize the lactic acid accumulated.

The body underwent what we call an “Oxygen Debt” that must be replaced by deep breathing

This is the amount of extra oxygen needed by muscle tissue to oxidize lactic acid and to replenish the depleted ATP and phosphocreatine following vigorous exercise.

Hydrolysis of ATP:

The phosphoanhydride bonds (ATP) is considered high-energy.   This implies that an appreciable amount of energy is released when one of these bonds is broken in a water-mediated breakdown reaction (hydrolysis) whereby the ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP.

But the reaction is reversed from ADP to ATP when the oxygen debt is repaid and the un-oxidized glucose is oxidized from lactic acid.

I short, all exercises, short or long term, vigorous or mild and pleasant all requires oxygen, and adequate ventilation is an absolute necessity.

Thus  my recommendation as a medical  physiologist, face mask should  never be worn to obstruct the airways and ventilation  during  any form of exercises

Brain Swelling:

A total or even a partial deficiency of oxygen is very crucial to the brain.

This resulting cerebral anoxia may also produce brain swelling and this can add to brain damage by squeezing off smaller blood vessels and interrupting the local blood supply.

This is similar to an increase in the intracranial pressure (ICP) such as during a head injury when intracranial fluid accumulates within an un-yielding and fixed volume of the skull

This compromises the flow of blood supply to the brain even further.

There is a pressure and volume relationship between ICP, volume of CSF, blood, and brain tissue, and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) is known as the Monro–Kellie doctrine or hypothesis (1) (2) (3).

Monro - Kellie Hypothesis:

This hypothesis states that the cranial compartment is inelastic and that the volume inside the cranium is fixed. The cranium and its constituents (blood, CSF, and brain tissue) create a state of volume equilibrium, such that any increase in volume of one of the cranial constituents must be compensated by a decrease in volume of another.

Similar representation is shown if the brain swells due to a deficiency of oxygen to the brain or inadequate perfusion

Prolonged Outcome:

If the anoxic environment persists in prolonged exercise by blocking out adequate high volume  ventilation through respiration,  I am afraid severe anoxic damage to the brain is inevitable which may result in collapse of the person in the middle of the exercise.

If the mask is not removed immediately, and supplemental oxygen applied if necessary, these effects may cause other organs to fail.

If prolonged it may result in coma, and from there, the possibility of an event into a persistent vegetative state (PVS).

In PVS the basic brain functions such as breathing spontaneously, maintenance of heartbeat and blood pressure, digestion of food and urine output will be maintained, but the patient is in a vegetable state due to severe anoxia by blocking out ventilation and oxygen  wearing a face mask during  severe exercise such as fast and long distance running, or running up a hill.
