The Pitfalls of Polypharmacy in Managing Chronic Lifestyle Diseases

Thank you Mel Yuen for writing, sharing your personal thoughts about your health problems and the problem you had with your doctor who wanted to prescribe unnecessary medicine for you that you refused.

This is what we value and cherish in a WhatsApp chat group. We don't think much of those who don't even have that decency and courtesy to thank, let alone write a single word here while others take tremendous efforts to write and share personally written thoughts. Despite that, most don't even have that simple decency to say "thank you". We know who they are.

Thank you once again especially when we write using complete sentences others can understand, not use short cuts s sentences with missing words. I am very sticky about how they present themselves when writing to others

In answering your problem, it is NOT necessary that you must follow your doctor's advice or prescription if you do not wish. It is your personal right under the Patient's Charter.

Most ordinary doctors  do not update themselves with advances in medicine by periodically reading medical journals meant actually for them for the advancement of their knowledge in medicine. We call this CME (continuing medical education) needed for their annual practicing license. Doctors  who are actively in research in a teaching hospital do read a lot of research papers and also conduct research for their academic promotion.

Instead, most  doctors in private practice take the easy  way out by listening to drug salesmen who aggressively promote their products as their 'drug of choice' with rewards of overseas trips for them and their family if they hit the target by prescribing a certain amount of their products to patients. This sort of sales promotion and gimmick has been going on for a very, very long time already. I have attended a lot of dinners given by drug companies promoting their products to doctors, and I am fully aware of what's been going on.

For instance, statin prescriptions for cholesterol average a total annual profit of $24.5 billion US dollars in the US alone and their prescription and profits are sharply rising

I have mentioned and explained that at great lengths and in good technical  details in one of  my hundreds of blog articles, an example is here in this link

Does Cholesterol cause Coronary Heart Disease

https://scientificlogic.blogspot.com/2023/12/more-on-cholesterol-and-coronary-heart.html?m=1

There are many, many drugs that are NOT only unnecessary, but they do not cure anything at all, but are just prescribed for life for symptomatic management because the root causes of the disease were never treated but just prescribed, prescribed... and prescribed until one disease is linked on to another  till the patient are on different types of medication for life. We call this "polypharmacy."

Symptoms are not diseases but are distress calls by the body in agony. Why must we suppress the distress calls of an ailing body with chemicals (drugs) but not curing and healing an ailing body by removing the root causes? I want doctors to explain this logically to me if they deserve to be called "doctors".  The word "doctor" originates from the Latin verb docere, meaning "to teach". This means a doctor is a teacher, nothing more

These doctors are not teachers at all.  They are only interested in listening to the drugs manufacturers to keep up with their continuous profit. As the adage says " a patient cured is a customer lost"

When we use the word "cure" we mean only ONE or two applications of the medicine or treatment. But if we just keep giving the medicine we are NOT curing the patient at all.  We are just suppressing the disease or their symptoms for years on with all these chemicals under the hidden and glorified name as "medicines." We are then doing injustice to the patients. That's not a cure, Doctors unfortunately are not  trained in lifestyle medicine that is now an emerging new field of medicine, but on symptomatic and disease suppression. They do not realise this because they are so effectively brainwashed by all these extremely powerfully rich drug companies that uses their high-flown mathematical and statistical language that doctors do not understand - because medical doctors are not trained or learned in mathematics. Their training is mainly biological-based. So they get mesmerized and brain-washed by mathematics and statistics the scientists working in drug companies present to them when promoting their products.

I once attended a medical conference where a paper was presented by the president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Since he was from Edinburgh, and after he presented his paper, I asked him what happened to Sir Stanley Davidson who was also from Edinburgh whose famous text book on The Principles and Practice of Medicine was used throughout the Commonwealth nations for the training of doctors and medical students. He replied sarcastically this:

"Oh, Stanley Davidson. He was blind in one eye, deaf in another ear, lost in sensation on one arm, unable to use his leg in another, had liver damage in one,  and kidney problems in another, all of them described  in his own famous  textbook on the "Principles and Practice of Medicine".  Unfortunately the drugs he recommended in his own textbook for doctors could not cure him. Finally he died from his own drugs he described and recommend to doctors and medical students. How sarcastic coming from the mouth of the president of the Royal College of Physicians

I was not stunned but expected. In my blog I have written many, many articles and reviews on medicine including the dangers of taking even unnecessary food supplements but no one has acknowledge my research efforts reading  through volumes  of research papers before I  write to explain in my blog essays.

I know a very good specialist physician friend of mine in KB who told me he always advise his patients to continue  taking the medicine he prescribed and he told me this - "as long the patients listened to him and continued to take his medicines, they will be alright".  I didn't want to insult him by telling him "as long as your patients need no longer take your medicine, they are already cured and alright, but as long as his patients need to take his medicine, they are definitely NOT alright - that's for sure.

There is a world, world of difference between having to depend on medicine all their lives and one who is completely cured without any medicine. But I  did not want to hurt my consultant physician friend's  ego about his medicine

Don't think I am an idiot to listen to doctors. I am very sticky on what they claim after spending 25 years of my life in medical research as a senior researcher,  and I have constantly updated myself by reading volumes of research papers and attending countless medical conferences and paper presentations, including my own. I have also attended regular updates from the Royal Society of Medicine in London where I was admitted as a Fellow.

Just in one sentence "as long as you do not need to depend on your doctor's chemicals under the hidden glorified name as "medicines"  you are alright and completely cured, but as long as you depend on his "medicines" you are struck in his  mud forever"

Please explain clearly to me the logic of  drug-based medicine or even surgery like they did to my leg for 10 years with their two surgeries and their countless kinds of "medicines" they gave me. It has now  become worse under their treatment

I am disillusioned by my own medicine. It is not a wonder why 80 % of the world population goes for traditional medicine according to WHO and WHO actively encourages this trend and wants governments all over the world to implement this integrated treatment approach into the mainstream health care system

Hope that clarifies your problem with your doctor.
