Existence of the Dinosaurs in the Bible

 

There are a few videos claims sent to me for comments that dinosaurs existed in the Bible under different names. The question most people asked is, how did Noah managed to catch such huge creatures like dinosaurs and put them into his ark?

In the video below it says although the word ‘dinosaurs’ does not exist in the Bible, it uses other word like ‘leviathan, behemoth’ or other Hebrew word like ‘tannin’ to mean serpent, dragon since the word ‘dinosaurs’ was invented in 1841 by Sir Richard Owen from the Greek word ‘deinos’ and ‘sauros’ to mean ‘terrible lizard’

Although I respect the view of Daniel from the DLM Christian Lifestyle in the video, where he quoted numerous verses in the Bible such as in Isaiah 51:9, and Job 40:16 – 18 and elsewhere that uses other words more than 30 times indirectly referring to dinosaurs.

As a Christian myself, allow me to give my alternative or paralleled view as a scientist especially on Evolution

During the Mesozoic, or "Middle Life" era, life diversified rapidly and giant reptiles, dinosaurs and other monstrous beasts roamed the Earth. The period, which spans from about 252 million years ago to about 66 million years ago, was also known as the age of reptiles or the age of dinosaurs.

However, during the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) there was an extinction event known as the Cretaceous–Tertiary (K–T) extinction

During that period there was a sudden mass extinction of three-quarters of the plant and animal species on Earth, including the dinosaurs approximately 66 million years ago.

With the exception of some ectothermic species such as sea turtles and crocodilians, no tetrapods weighing more than 25 kilograms survived. It marked the end of the Cretaceous Period, and with it the Mesozoic era, while heralding the beginning of the Cenozoic era, which continues to this day.

It was millions of years later that the Great Pyramids of Giza and their elaborate burial complexes were built during a frenetic period of construction, roughly between 2550 to 2490 B.C. They were built by Pharaohs. They were already there even Moses came into being in the Bible.

One theory giving the date of Moses in Egypt was in I Kings 6:1 that the Exodus from Egypt occurred 480 years before Solomon began building the Temple in Jerusalem. This occurred in the fourth year of his reign, about 960 BCE; therefore, the Exodus would date about 1440 BCE.

It was believed that Noah was born 2448 B.C. in Shulon, East Eden. He died 1848 B.C. in Salem, Cannan. Noah was then five hundred years old; and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. ' (Genesis 5:32). This means the Great Flood occurred between those two periods.

But then palaeontologists found the 'Age of Dinosaurs' occurred during the Mesozoic Era that consists of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods. Different dinosaur species lived during each of these three periods

The Mesozoic era was a period that stretched from 248 to 65 million years ago. It is divided into the three time periods in which the dinosaurs lived: the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. 

These three periods were long, long before even Noah was born. It is estimated the Great Flood during Noah’s time began approximately 4,359 years ago around 2,348 BC. This period was long, long after all the dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period after roaming on Earth for about 165 million years.

Hence, we can see there are huge gaps in time from the time God created the heavens and earth till the emergence of man and his activities given in the Bible. We cannot blame what was written in the Bible and all the missing geological and biological events not described there because the Bible is not a science book to give all the details. It is up to us scientists in various disciplines to find out to fill up the details and all the gaps and missing links. God gave us brains to think for ourselves. The Bible is far, far more important for our salvation than just a science book. It is a book on eternal salvation for us all.

If the Bible was a science book, then no number of libraries collectively throughout the entire world could describe all those details on Creation and on how life was evolved and existed in praise of the wondrous works of God as an Intelligent Designer. It is up to us to use our brains He gave us to think, discover and analyse all His incredible works of Arts, Science and Designs

However, in the eyes of science based on fossil records and biblical dates, there was no possibility for Noah to bring any dinosaurs into his Ark. Even if dinosaurs still existed, they are far too huge, even as baby dinosaurs as some claimed, to be brought into the boat Noah built unless we are talking about birds which are one form of dinosaurs which exist still today

Dinosaurs were prehistoric reptiles that have existed on Earth from about 245 million years ago to the present. Modern birds are one kind of dinosaur that share a common ancestor with non-avian dinosaurs.

Non-avian or non-bird dinosaurs which are now extinct as it would be even during Noah’s time varied greatly in shape and size. Some weighed as much as 80 tons and were more than 37 metres long. Others were the size of a chicken and weighed as little as 3 -4 kg. All non-avian dinosaurs lived on land. Some may have gone into the swamps and lakes for food, but they did not live entirely in water. Meat-eating dinosaurs walked on two legs and hunted alone or in groups. Plant-eaters walked on either two or four legs and grazed on plants.

Most people think that dinosaurs were those huge terrible lizard-like monsters. This is true only to a certain extent. For examples, the dimensions of some of the largest dinosaurs were the Supersarus measuring 32 – 42 metres by 35 – 40 tons, Maraapunisaurus 30 – 40 metres by 87 -132 tons, Argentinosaurus 30 – 35 metres by 72 – 110 tons, Patagotitan 31 – 37 metres by 57- 85 tons. They were definitely huge and massive.

But there are smallest present-day dinosaurs too such as Parvicursor remotus which is not definitely not an avian or bird in origin. Parvicursor remotus weighs only 185 grams by 50 centimetres long. Among living dinosaurs, the bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is smallest “glorified dinosaur” at 1.9 g, and 5.5 cm long

Present day birds evolved from dinosaurs that were reptiles. Hence from the evolutionary biology point of view, birds are "glorified reptiles", and so are glorified dinosaurs as the origin and early evolution of birds.

By the time Noah existed 60 million years later, all those ancient dinosaurs were already long extinct and there was no way he could have brought in a monstrous-size one into his ark.

But he brought in a raven or a dove into his ark to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.

In this way, if we look from the view of evolutionary biology, then we can indirectly claim Noah brought in a dinosaur into his ark, but not those monstrous lizards.
